Somerset Maugham’s classic 1920s tale of infidelity, revenge and redemption in the Orient is brought to life in a terrifically acted and exquisitely beautiful drama starring Edward Norton and Naomi Watts. Norton is especially good, finding humanity in a stern scientist who inflicts cruel and unusual punishment on his cheating wife, by hauling her to an isolated Chinese village ravaged by deadly disease. “Superbly written, sensitively directed and brilliantly acted” Daily Mail
