ABOUT THE TORBAY FILM CLUB

ABOUT THE COMMITTEE

We are always looking for additional volunteers who have some time to spare and would like to get involved.  If you would like to get more involved please drop us an email at admin@torbayfilmclub.co.uk.

Here are a few thoughts from the Torbay Film Club committee:

ISOBELLE BELCHER  Front of House Co-ordinator

My worst film experience was actually the only film I have ever wanted to leave half way through. It was ‘The Grinch’ with Jim Carey but I was next to the wall at end of long, long row of children and couldn’t get out. I can’t think why I had even gone other than it was winter in Guernsey and had been raining for weeks and it was a last resort to fill an external Sunday. You take what you can get on the Island!

EMMELINE GEE  Chair (Currently Sailing the Med)

Favourite cinema experience: Cinema Paradiso in Wanaka, New Zealand, where you can take a glass of wine into the cinema, watch the film on comfy sofas, and pre-order a thai curry for the intermission!

CAROLINE GOTT  Acting Chair and Website Co-ordinator

Favourite film quote: "I am drowning in a sea of confusion".  Which film?  [answers on a postcard to...]  I love all films: mainstream Hollywood blockbusters, quirky independents, subtitled films etc etc. My favourite film is Like Water for Chocolate - I still cry every time I watch it!

CHRISTINE PATTISON  Treasurer

I was introduced to foreign and independent films as a youngster, at the Cameo cinema during the Edinburgh International Film Festival and especially enjoyed Fernandel and Jaques Tati. Recent films that have interested and entertained me are The Painted Veil, Amelie and films featuring Daniel Autieul.

 NADEGE REBUFFIE  Secretary

For my 16th birthday, my sister offers me "La vita é bella" (life is wonderful) I simply couldn't stop crying at the end of it... Since then, I'm fond of foreign and independant movies and I am fascinated by the work and talent of the people who made them. The movies I really enjoyed these last years were Persepolis and Volver, and I recommend them to anybody who hasn't seen them yet!!

KEVIN RYLAND   Film Booking Coordinator

I can remember the excitement of seeing Kubrick's "2001" in Cinerama at a long-defunct London cinema back in '69. Wow!  I have fond memories of seeing George Stevens's beautiful western "Shane" when I was a child, something that got me hooked on cinema.  Worst film experience? The tedious "Les Carabiniers" which is Jean-Luc Godard at his most mind-numbingly political.

KAREN WHITE   Marketing Co-ordinator

Favourite cinema moment: Karlovy Vary film festival watching midnight showing of Poseidon 2006 remake. Dreadful film, but was transformed into a comedy experience when hundreds of people shout directions, cheer and clap whenever someone avoids near death. Also, the first time I've cheered the credits after each name was shouted out!

We are grateful to the South West Group of the British Federation of Film Societies, Torquay Museum and Torbay Council for their support.

Torbay Film Club is a not-for-profit group run by volunteers who want to see the finest independent and world cinema, in Torbay.

Films are shown on a monthly basis and are open to members and non-members. We’re keen to make the screenings as sociable as possible, and before and after the films there will be an opportunity to have a drink and a chat about the film, whether you come on your own or with friends.

The films we are showing were voted for democratically by our members (as well as the committee), and we are pleased to offer a mixture of English language and subtitled films, with at least one ‘classic’ (pre- 1985) film and a factual film.

We look forward to welcoming you and sharing with you our enthusiasm for films.

Please see the Membership section for details of how to become a member.
